UPDATE: WILDLIFE KILLING CONTEST PETITION

“COMPROMISE”

After a 3 ½ hour hearing, the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners rejected our petition, asking for regulations, by a 5:2 vote. Instead, the commission suggested that, with our help, a commission policy statement be constructed to address killing contests.

Coupled with the Nevada BLM requirement for a Special Recreational Permit to hold such contests (6-month application period, applicant has to supply NEPA data, opportunity for public comment), this compromise is worth supporting. A commission policy statement that does not support such contests will be useful in addressing any application for such an event the BLM may receive. If the policy proves weak and ineffective, we can return and request regulatory change.

In the past, such requests from our side have generally been “stonewalled”. To be offered a compromise is a new experience, and due, in no small part, to all of you who have helped us with this project. We thank you for your assistance and hope you continue to follow us as we work together to bring sensible, democratic wildlife management to Nevada.
