The Battle between CONSERVATIONISTS vs HUNTERS!  By Thomas Mangelsen

Receiving news of 399’s passing is a day we all feared would come, a day from the beginning we hoped would be far into the future… a day regardless of the circumstances… was inevitable.  
 
Near midnight on October 22nd, the most famous grizzly bear that had ever lived, Grizzly 399, was struck by a vehicle and killed 25 miles south of Jackson Wyoming in the Snake River Canyon. She was almost 29 years old.
Her story has circled the globe. She became a symbol of hope, resilience, and a much-needed coexistence between humanity and the natural world. For many, she has been our guide, teacher, and inspiration.

399 first appeared near Oxbow Bend in Grand Teton National Park with her three cubs of the year in the summer of 2006. Who would’ve guessed Teton Park and millions of human lives around the world, including my own, would forever be changed. No wild animal in history has ever been so loved by so many and none has drawn such notoriety, attention, caring, and concern. Read More…
